"Heroic Icon" War Bonds Blog

Original Image

First Image I chose

This is the first image I chose from the Internet that reminded me and also corresponded with the original poster we were given to write about. I chose this image because the "heroic" icon of solders fighting for our freedom and also fighting for America is strongly displayed. This was a major part of world history and this image is always the first that pops into my mind when this era is mentioned. The meaning behind this picture is breath taking and emotional, and to me pieces together every detail and thought behind the WPA poster above.

Second Image

This next image I chose because Uncle Sam played a huge "heroic" icon. I always remember seeing posters that had Uncle Sam saying "I want you" and pointing towards the viewer. The main focus in this image is uncle Sam but your eyes don't stay on just him, the planes flying over head and the solders on the ground fighting give it so much more depth. The relationship between this image and the two above are so strong, I had no hesitation when I started to browse the web, they all represent a very important time and instantly remind you of the meaning and monumental icon that is represented.

Third Image

This is my last image because it is a monument that was dedicated to all the lives lost and all those who fought in WW2. I chose this to be my last image because this monument is real, its not an old poster or a older image that was taken or drawn, but built to honor and remember why we have what we have today. Going from a solider holding a flag, to a picture taken of solders putting up our flag and the iconic image Uncle Sam stood for, to a live monument. All of these are what I think about when we were given this assignment. Starting off with the WPA poster kind of gives you a broad range of thought, but all of these display the same message, meaning, and iconic moment .

WPA posters

A. The palette the artist used in this poster are darker shades. To me they seem kind of jagged and have more of an edge to them. The relationship of the colors work well together since the colors have a darker feel , it allows you to be in a heavier sort of deep state. And as you move towards the bottom of the poster the colors brighten up and bring you into a happier more up beat mood. The colors work really well for this poster because of the theme and meaning of the poster.

B. The artist's style in the poster is more of a cartoon like style. When I researched common pictures of an old style sewing machine, the images that came up had sharp right angle edges and no round edges. They were also more defined and easier to understand what you were looking at, where as in the poster the sewing machine isn't quite as obvious or realistic.
c. The poster to me has kind of a hidden message. It's not telling you to go sew for victory, I believe it represents how hard times were back when this poster was made, and what sacrifices were made by not only the men but also for the women. The colors kind of back up the message, because the artist used more earth tones on the top part and worked to brighter warm colors towards the bottom, which displays the real message of Victory.

2.

a. The palette used for this poster are modern old common colors. You've got black a deep burgundy and two common earthy browns that were pretty fluent on most things back in this time period. The relationship in these colors are there basic medium. Each color looks as if they started off the same and the artist used a little more dark red or brown to either darken them and more of the base color to lighten them. They work very well together for me, each one kind of represents an emotion or a statement in the poster.

b. The illustration used in this poster is your classic WPA era style for any advertisement. When I looked up similar examples I found brighter more cartoon looking posters and images. I believe the artist used a more realistic direction in this poster. The style of writing and the colors used gives it a more serious effect. Where as the more cartoon looking images I saw kind of make you think of an old movie or fake kind of feel.

c. The behavior that would be attracted to this style of poster to me would be more adults, like couples going out on the town or even more men trying to have a night out. The colors a long with the style of writing give the poster that type of feel. The darker colors give it the edge that you would assume adults would want to see. The poster is asking you to come out and visit a theatre show , and spend a night out . The poster to me is more convincing or appealing to men then it would be to the average woman.

3.

a. The palette used in this poster has a wide range it goes from dark warm colors to brighter cooler colors. The relationship between the colors is very nice, they all seem to blend from one color shade of pink to another. Then on top of your background blend you have vibrant dark dominate colors that stick out more Backus of the background. These colors work because of the attraction, they keep your eyes moving all over the poster instead of one specific dead spot on the poster.

b. I had a hard time researching this exact object because of the non-realistic form that it has. But it was pretty obvious that its meant to be a person holding a camera. The artist went for a kind of abstract look. Even though the camera is the obvious thing in the poster, the human like figure along with the city line are somewhat deformed they are still fairly easy to detect.

c. To me this poster is working to influence people to enter a photograph contest, verses the east and the west. The artist seems like he is trying to advertise an art exhibition that they want people to enter and showcase their work. I think the poster is convincing because the artist is using not only eye catching colors but is also including rivlery and competition along with showing off peoples talents. Everyone knows that its hard to say no to a contest, but if your an artist trying to show your work your always going to be open to exhibitions.
